On July 9, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, Jibreel Pratt, a 26-year-old man from Detroit, admitted to two counts of concealing cryptocurrency donations to the Islamic State (ISIS).
According to the plea agreement, Pratt began contacting an informant he believed to be a member of ISIS in February 2023, expressing his willingness to join the organization and recording a video of allegiance. In March and May of the same year, Pratt sent Bitcoin to the informant with the intention of funding others to join ISIS or support violent acts.
Pratt concealed the nature and origin of the Bitcoin transfers by using privacy-focused VPNs and applications that encrypt private keys and transaction data. This crime carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.00, but both parties have agreed that a 9-year sentence is an appropriate punishment. Sentencing is scheduled for November 13, 2025. [Deep Tide TechFlow]
