🇲🇽 Mexico defeats the USA 2–1 to claim their 13th CONCACAF title – but not without controversy.
The final wasn’t just about goals, but also about a major refereeing decision. In the second half, Mexican defender Jorge Sánchez appeared to handle the ball inside his own box. Still, referee Mario Escobar chose not to award a penalty, sparking outrage from the U.S. side.
American defender Chris Richards didn’t hold back in his post-match comments:
The guy grabbed the ball like Shaq! That’s CONCACAF for you – they hate us. But we just have to keep moving forward.
I promise you this – we won’t lose another final to #Mexico. I threw away my silver medal. No point in keeping it.
As a nation, we strive for greatness – and as individuals, too. We’ll get there.
Would you have called a penalty? 👇
