BlackRock's spot Bitcoin ETF (IBIT fund) surpassed $70 billion in assets after just 341 days of trading, becoming the fastest ETF in history to reach this milestone—five times faster than the previous record of 1,691 days held by the gold ETF (GLD). The IBIT fund is the largest among similar funds, far outpacing Fidelity's $31 billion asset size. The GLD fund is the world's largest physical gold ETF, with assets of approximately $100 billion. Launched in January 2024, BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF held about 2.8% of the total Bitcoin supply by April. The fund holds Bitcoin on behalf of its clients, but BlackRock itself does not own these cryptocurrencies. Gold and Bitcoin have performed well this year, partly due to increased economic uncertainty.
