According to Foresight News and Bitcoin.com, two detectives from the New York Police Department (NYPD) are under investigation for alleged involvement in the kidnapping and torture of Italian crypto entrepreneur Michael Valentino Teofrasto Carturan. Detectives Roberto Cordero and Raymond J. Low were reassigned to restricted duty on May 28. The investigation revealed that they may have provided unauthorized security services to the kidnappers, with Cordero reportedly escorting the victim Carturan from the airport on May 6. Carturan was illegally detained for over two weeks by two crypto investors, John Woeltz and William Duplessie, and subjected to torture as they attempted to access his crypto wallet containing millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin. Carturan eventually escaped and reported to the police. The Manhattan District Attorney's office has charged Woeltz and Duplessie with kidnapping and torture, with Woeltz's indictment scheduled to be unsealed at the June 11 court hearing.
