AI is moving towards hardware. This makes sense: it will enable more data gathering, potentially richer data, and more context from across our lives. So-called "AI-first devices," like one recently rumored to be in development at OpenAI, will likely evolve past screen-based UIs with the goal of becoming invisible extensions and augmentations of our thoughts and actions.

Cool? Potentially. But also scary – if all that data is going to any single company for them to monopolize. We already feed tons of data to corporations with our everyday actions on our phones, laptops, and apps. Imagine multiplying that 10x or 100x with data from every minute of your life. Even if you feel you have nothing to hide, or that the convenience gains might be worth it: telling one company every single thing you do is dangerous for all of us.

This is why we need User-Owned AI.
