How dense is Africa's weather station coverage?
We mapped 3 layers of weather infra across Africa.
1️⃣ Left map
Our Cell Capacity model shows the minimum density of stations required for reliable weather data based on topography and urban complexity. Most areas need 1 station per 50–200 km² to meet global standards.
2️⃣ Middle map
Shows GHCN network, the official global climate station dataset. In most of Africa, station density is 1 per 1000–10000 km², and much sparser in many regions.
⚠️ This is far below the threshold for meaningful coverage.
3️⃣ Right map
Our current network. We’ve matched or surpassed GHCN density in Kenya, South Africa, Liberia, and Ghana, but much of the continent remains uncovered.
✅ This is why DePIN is the answer.
