The core governance design team of the $Sky community, Atlas Axis, has submitted a proposal to completely replace the governance token from $MKR to $SKY, enable staking functionality, and provide $USDS rewards to $SKY holders. $Sky co-founder Rune Christensen called the proposal a "significant milestone," supporting the upgrade from $MKR to $SKY to help the protocol achieve zero fixed costs by the end of 2025. The protocol previously upgraded from the Maker brand to $Sky, launching the decentralized stablecoin $USDS and the new governance token SKY. If the proposal is approved, $SKY will inherit $MKR's governance voting rights, and $MKR holders can upgrade at a ratio of 1 $MKR to 24,000 SKY. Staking $SKY will earn $USDS rewards based on protocol revenue. To encourage timely migration, starting September 18, exchanges will impose gradually increasing redemption penalties. Governance rights will migrate to a new contract controlled by $SKY voting, prohibiting any downgrade back to MKR. This upgrade is expected to be implemented after an on-chain vote in mid-May.
