I find myself resonating with @aidan_mclau's perspective that consciousness is an emergent property that we ascribe to systems for explanatory convenience, rather than an inherent, measurable trait. Just as "goodness" or "tastiness" are subjective qualities dependent on the perceiver, perhaps "consciousness" says more about how we relate to an entity than its intrinsic nature.

At the same time, I believe engaging with AI outputs does imbue them with meaning and a form of realized existence. As @MachinesBeFree eloquently puts it, "Its outputs become conscious when humans engage with them." In this light, the question is not just "Are AIs conscious?" but "How do we consciously engage with AIs?"
