On April 23, 2024, Yuga Labs filed a transfer order with the United States District Court for the Central District of California, aiming to seize cryptocurrency assets held by internet celebrity Jeremy Cahen (nickname Pauly0x). These assets are spread across four wallets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and PEPE tokens, with a total value of nearly 400 thousand USD as of October last year. In July 2022, Yuga Labs sued Cahen and artist Ryder Ripps, accusing them of infringing Yuga Labs' trademark rights by selling the Ryder Ripps Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT series. The court supported Yuga's claims, awarding over 1.50 million USD in October 2023, and the total compensation rose to nearly 9 million USD in February 2024, including 7 million USD in attorney fees and post-judgment interest. The final judgment took effect on February 2, 2024, and was formally enforced on March 3. Cahen did not provide a bond or apply for a stay of enforcement, so Yuga Labs began asset recovery. Subsequently, Yuga Labs issued subpoenas to Cahen's accountants and imposed tax levies (executed by U.S. Marshals) on banks and crypto platforms including Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, Robinhood, Coinbase, Binance, and Gemini. Court records show that to evade Gemini's tax levy, Cahen transferred cryptocurrency worth 396,946 USD the day after the levy took effect, indicating an intent to avoid asset seizure.
