Odaily Planet Daily reported that U.S. House Speaker Johnson stated on Monday that, even though some Republican lawmakers are publicly urging Trump to negotiate a way to cancel tariffs before they take effect on Wednesday, the House will still provide "space" for Trump to implement his large-scale global tariff regime.
Johnson said, "We will give him the space necessary to implement the policy and then see how things develop." The Speaker further stated that Trump is "actively engaged and trying to address" the trade deficit issue. Opposition within the Republican Party is presented in the form of bipartisan legislation aimed at reclaiming Congress's power over tariffs from the president.
Previously, Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell and Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley proposed legislation to limit the president's unilateral power to impose tariffs. U.S. Representative Don Bacon (Republican from Nebraska) plans to introduce the House version of this legislation on Monday. However, due to strong opposition from a group of fiscal conservatives, Johnson declined to publicly commit to submitting the revised Senate budget plan for a vote in the House this week. Nonetheless, some senior Republican aides indicated that the current plan is still to hold the final vote as scheduled on Wednesday afternoon. (Politico)
