The Interchain Foundation (ICF) of Cosmos has funded the open-source development of Evmos, which is the native EVM framework in its multi-chain ecosystem. The framework developed for the Evmos project will be maintained as "Cosmos EVM" in the official cross-chain software stack, including the Cosmos SDK. This provides the Cosmos ecosystem with a standardized version of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This development allows Cosmos blockchains to integrate the Cosmos EVM, achieving full EVM compatibility, including support for JSON-RPC and Ethereum wallets. This initiative enhances cross-chain interoperability between the EVM ecosystem and Cosmos, especially through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol. Evmos co-founder Federico Kunze Küllmer will no longer serve as a core contributor to Evmos but will continue to provide interoperability and modular architecture advice for the Cosmos EVM to the ICF. Evmos was originally conceived in 2016 as Ethermint and launched its mainnet in 2022 as a Cosmos-based chain.
