In March 2023, Justin Drake, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, proposed the concept of Based Rollup (also known as L1-sequenced Rollup), advocating for the Ethereum mainnet to take on the role of sequencer for Rollups, thus addressing the problem of centralized sequencers. Building on Based Rollup, Spire Labs plans to launch an open-source framework called Based Stack, which enables developers to deploy their own Appchain. Through Based Stack, developers will be able to build Rollups that serve as singular application services rather than general-purpose Rollups, allowing them to customize relevant configurations based on their needs.
