There have been countless discussions about the main bottlenecks to AI growth, with a significant focus on GPUs and hardware elements. Recently, on @dwarkesh_sp podcast with Mark Zuckerberg, Mark highlighted that one of the major challenges in scaling will be the massive energy requirements. As the energy needs for AI data centers increase, eventually requiring gigawatt scale facilities that have yet to be constructed, it becomes evident that this will likely be a critical bottleneck.
This view of the energy bottleneck was echoed by @elonmusk in his predictions of upcoming electricity supply crunches and transformer shortages next year. With two industry leaders discussing this issue in such a short time frame, it definitely raises the question of 'when' rather than 'if'.
This will be an exciting problem for current and future companies to approach as we seek to maintain our forward momentum in AI development and if you are one of those companies, let us know what you’re working on!
