In 2024, the global cryptocurrency industry faced five major hacking attacks, resulting in losses exceeding 2.20 billion USD. Despite continuous advancements in blockchain technology and security protocols, hackers still exploit vulnerabilities in private keys, smart contracts, and employee systems to carry out attacks. Here are the five major cryptocurrency hacking incidents of 2024:
1. The DMM Bitcoin cryptocurrency exchange was hacked in May, resulting in the loss of 4,500 Bitcoins, valued at over 300 million USD. The hackers are believed to be linked to North Korea, utilizing stolen private keys for the attack.
2. The PlayDapp platform suffered two attacks in February, leading to the loss of 290 million USD worth of PLA tokens. The hackers ignored a 1 million USD bounty and the stolen funds have yet to be recovered.
3. The WazirX exchange was hacked in June, resulting in a loss of 235 million USD. Following the attack, WazirX transferred 75 million USD of user funds to other platforms, leading to legal issues.
4. Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen was hacked in January, losing 213 million XRP, worth 112.50 million USD. Despite efforts to recover the funds, no success has been achieved so far.
5. The Orbit Chain cross-chain bridge was hacked at the beginning of the year, resulting in a loss of 80 million USD. The stolen funds were laundered through Tornado Cash, making them difficult to trace.
