From powerful abstractions to break down and manage the attestation workflow in Web3 (e,g. DCAP v4 library with composable components, including on-chain PCCS), co-designing systems with TEE constructions that factor in certain design goals (e.g. preventing majority collusion of SMPC systems with TEE-capable GPUs in our work with Worldcoin Foundation), and for rollups to embrace more competitive, decentralized architecture (e.g. multi-proving systems backed by TEE Prover), these serve as a foundation for use once projects are production-ready.Automata’s commitment to the Superchain ecosystem is the culmination of years of dedicated work, dating back to the team’s mission of modular, machine trust with Automata 2.0. Optimistic rollups are attractive for verifying general-purpose computation such as attestations, particularly in reducing gas costs for users.Automata will use its native token, ATA, as the default gas token on its OP Stack Chain, a recently released feature by Optimism. EigenDA will serve as the data availability layer for Automata’s OP Stack Chain.Finally, we invite verified machines to be part of the Automata Gasdrop to start making their first attestations on-chain later this year.<h4>Machines, making attestations</h4>Blockchains have inviolable rules, but these networks are built on hardware. Hardware, devices, machines, exist in the physical world, and are ultimately controlled by people, either directly in the case of personal computers (running a node) or indirectly through organizations (GPU clusters). People change their minds all the time. Machines can be compromised by accident or malice. Users interact with a spoofed application without ever realizing it until it’s too late.With Proof of Machinehood, hardware attestations are the new construction material for building a Web3 propped by machine trust:<ul><li>Protocols can integrate attestations from external parties (i.e. any hardware that can produce a digital signature) into any kind of smart contract on-chain; the model can be made publicly verifiable and users can prove themselves that they applied the parameters of the model to their own authenticated hardware.</li><li>Developers gain confidence in the hardware configurations they deploy services on. This can be great for certain applications that rely on special-purpose hardware. In previous cases, verifying the authenticity of the machine is not just inconvenient but impossible.</li><li>Users get direct utility with a plethora of applications backed by Proof of Machinehood. Any service that can engage with a digitally attested piece of hardware information is a good candidate, and therefore the design space it unlocks is bound only by the imagination of the developer.</li></ul>What else can you do with machines that make attestations?TEE Coprocessors enforce the integrity of execution by performing them within secure hardware. And it’s thrilling to see that these efforts have borne fruit in various directions. Today, TEE Prover has been introduced to the entire EVM ecosystem with implementations on <a href="https://scroll.io/blog/scaling-security" target="_blank">Scroll</a> and <a href="https://blog.ata.network/automata-linea-the-path-to-decentralization-with-multi-prover-avs-a82fa557860c" target="_blank">Linea</a>. Multi-Prover AVS is already <a href="https://blog.ata.network/tee-coprocessor-automata-multi-prover-avs-on-eigenlayer-f0f0b8264abc" target="_blank">live</a> on EigenLayer Mainnet. Automata has announced our <a href="https://blog.ata.network/on-further-enhancing-worldcoin-foundations-smpc-system-with-nvidia-h100-tee-capable-gpus-ee986400ddeb" target="_blank">work</a> with Worldcoin Foundation on hardening SMPC systems with TEE-capable GPUs.We are constantly building and releasing in open-source with optimizations and toolings for smart contracts to interact with TEEs, including <a href="https://blog.ata.network/releasing-dcap-library-v4-a-unified-interface-to-verify-tees-on-chain-2f27538babb4" target="_blank">Automata’s DCAP v4 library</a>, an iteration upon its predecessor being a <a href="https://github.com/automata-network/automata-dcap-v3-attestation" target="_blank">Solidity verifier</a>, that now allows for a full blockchain-based attestation framework, including on-chain PCCS, both of which are now running on Mainnet. In this time we have also introduced a <a href="https://github.com/automata-network/dcap-bonsai-cli" target="_blank">ZK equivalent to verify quotes using RISC Zero</a>.<h4>The future, looking optimistic</h4>Supported by AltLayer, Automata’s universal attestation layer will join an ever-growing network of chains built on Optimism’s open-source standard codebase, the OP Stack. As part of the Superchain, Automata will also contribute a portion of its revenue back to the Optimism Collective.There are various reasons why it made (a lot of) sense for us to build within the Optimism ecosystem. The OP Stack’s activation of RIP-7212 in its <a href="https://github.com/ethereum/RIPs/blob/master/RIPS/rip-7212.md" target="_blank">upcoming</a> Fjord upgrade introduces precompile support for secp256r1 curve. Gas savings with native precompiles for verifying secp256r1 signatures in Intel DCAP SGX and TDX attestations are significant when compared to current implementations. Lowering gas costs drives on-chain adoption of attestation workflows.We believe as well that Optimism’s implementation of the <a href="https://attest.org/" target="_blank">Ethereum Attestation Service</a>, which is <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2023/05/04/layer-2-network-optimism-to-use-ethereum-attestation-service-to-promote-user-trust/" target="_blank">integrated</a> out-of–the-box in the OP Stack, can meaningfully engage members of the Optimism community by recognizing contributors and providing a genuine sense of ownership. Optimism’s close adherence to the Ethereum way of work — from its values down to the tech stack — was a huge part of what drew us to the L2.Part of this is evident in a culture that values curiosity and openness to new technology, including the recent release of their Alt-DA mode that allows for new data availability (DA) layers to be incorporated into the Superchain ecosystem. Projects are positive-sum, both within the ecosystem and with the wider Web3 world.We are prioritizing verified machines with the Automata Gasdrop to optimize the machine attestation layer for them. Automata will provide a casual gas allowance to encourage and support free attestations, with the goal of making it easy to get started. Alongside the Gasdrop, we have also earmarked 1 million ATA as part of an Attestation Grant to be distributed to select operators running our Multi-Prover AVS on EigenLayer Mainnet.<h4>A Machine Attestation Layer</h4>Some of the highlights of Automata’s OP Stack Chain:<ul><li>Custom gas token in the form of Automata’s native token, ATA. Where Automata becomes the machine attestation layer underpinning a more open, trustless, and resistant Internet, so will $ATA become the default attestation token for Web3 users.</li><li>Support from EigenDA, which is a powerful consideration of how data availability schemes can be a mechanism for scaling long-term network bandwidth. Hyperscale data availability has emerged as a compelling pitch to some of the limitations of Ethereum’s rollup-centric roadmap.</li><li>Automata’s Gasdrop will allow users to interact, test, and build applications without paying gas fees.
