The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has announced the initiation of a cross-border investigation into Google Ireland Limited to determine whether Google has complied with EU data protection laws in developing its artificial intelligence models.
This investigation will focus on Google's use of personal data of EU citizens in training its Pathways Language Model 2 (PaLM 2).
PaLM 2, reportedly a new generation AI model introduced by Google, is claimed to be faster and more efficient than previous models. The model offers four scale versions: Gecko, Otter, Bison, and Unicorn, suitable for different scenarios. Gecko, being a lightweight version, is capable of running offline on mobile devices. Google has stated that as PaLM 2 is integrated into various products, continuous updates will be released.
