VanEck analysts have identified several factors contributing to Ethereum's poor price performance, as detailed in their August 2024 Crypto Monthly Recap. The decline in Ethereum's share of decentralized exchange trading volume from 42% in 2022 to 29% in 2024 is highlighted. The report categorizes the issues into three main areas: a general decline in network revenue, policy choices, and competition from layer-2 solutions and other high-throughput layer-1 blockchains like Solana, Sui, and Aptos. These competitors are drawing speculative demand away from Ethereum by offering faster transaction processing capabilities. Additionally, Ethereum's layer-1 revenues are being undercut by its own layer-2 networks, further exacerbated by the Dencun upgrade in March 2024, which significantly reduced network fees and led to an oversupply of Ethereum layer-2 solutions, according to Anoma co-founder Adrian Brink.
