Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has transferred 80 $ETH (nearly $300,000) to the privacy protocol Railgun, marking another instance of his engagement with the service. Buterin has been using Railgun for several months, often with smaller amounts, according to on-chain data from Arkham Intelligence. This follows a previous transfer of 100 $ETH in April, valued at $300,000 at the time, where Buterin praised Railgun's use of privacy pools protocol for enhancing user privacy without compromising it for bad actors. Railgun, utilizing zk SNARKs technology, aims to provide privacy on open-ledger blockchains by concealing wallet addresses during transactions. Despite misconceptions of being a mixing service like the sanctioned Tornado Cash, Railgun is a privacy platform. Buterin's support for privacy in transactions was reiterated in a post on X, stating "Privacy is normal" and highlighting Railgun's ability to prevent bad actors from joining the common pool. However, Railgun has faced challenges, including misuse, such as the movement of $63.5 million in Ether stolen from the Horizon Bridge by suspected North Korean hackers to Railgun, which the protocol refuted claims of being used by North Korean hackers after reports suggested involvement by the hacking group Lazarus.
