PlayDapp, a South Korean blockchain-based game development platform and non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace, has lost over $290 million in crypto from an exploit lasting four days. The incident began on February 9 when an unauthorized wallet minted 200 million $PLA tokens worth $36 million. Blockchain security firm PeckShield revealed that the wallet was added after the token's smart contract's private keys were compromised. In response, PlayDapp offered the hacker a white hat bounty of $1 million to return the funds by February 13, threatening legal action otherwise. The attacker then minted another 1.59 billion $PLA tokens worth $249.6 million, laundering the stolen funds across different blockchains. PlayDapp has since asked centralized exchanges to suspend $PLA transactions and has frozen the hacker's wallets. Investigations are ongoing, with PlayDapp engaging in talks with exchanges for migration solutions like airdrops, and seeking assistance from $PLA token holders and DEX operators. Meanwhile, $PLA's value has dropped more than 18% since the first attack.
