The project was developed by Pixowl, which was founded in 2011 by Arthur Madrid and Sebastien Borget. The Sandbox originally started as a mobile game in 2012 but transitioned into a blockchain-based virtual world in the following years.

The public sale for The Sandbox's $SAND token took place in August 2020.
